Competency Based Single Engine IR

The aim of the Competency Based Instrument Rating (CBIR) Single Engine modular course, is to train PPL or CPL holders for their Instrument Rating, whist allowing for any relevant instrument flight experience, they may already have.

The training is intended, to allow the candidate to reach the level of proficiency needed to operate aeroplanes under Instrument Flight Rules and in Instrument Meteorological Conditions. Put simply, to navigate by the use of instruments alone, in cloud or conditions of bad visibility by day and night.

The course involves 40 hours training for a single engine CBIR and 45 hours for a multi engine CBIR.

PAFT Recommendation - In the present pilot job market, PAFT recommends that the training should be conducted in two parts:

1. Instrument Rating (Restricted) Course

15 hours dual instruction in a Piper Warrior aircraft OR
15 hours dual instruction in a DA40 (10 hours aircraft / 5 hours simulator)

This training gives the candidate instrument flying experience mentioned in the introduction. This is followed by:

2. CBIR(A) Single Engine Course

25 hours dual instruction in a DA40 aircraft OR
25 hours dual instruction in a DA40 simulator and aircraft

Total Instrument Training Hours 40. The IR test may now be taken, subject to the theoretical knowledge requirements having been met.

Credits for previous IFR experience (up to 30 hours) can be used towards the 40 hour total requirement. Meaning the absolute minimum training requirement from an ATO is 10 hours.

We recommend you pause your training at this point and consider the pilot job market. If the market is good, convert your Single Engine IR into a Multi engine IR as described below, because to work as a commercial pilot, a multi-engine rating and instrument rating are required to be employed by an airline or other air operator.

Single Pilot Instrument Rating - SEP

You can claim a maximum of 30 hours towards the 40 hours course if you have flown under IFR and IMC conditions under the privileges of an EIR, ICAO IR or IMC/IR(R).

You must have completed:

A minimum of 10 hours of instrument flight time under instruction in an aeroplane at an Authorised Training Organisation.
A minimum of 25 hours of dual instrument instruction

Single Pilot Instrument Rating - MEP

You can claim a maximum of 35 hours towards the 45 hours course if you have flown under IFR and IMC conditions under the privileges of an EIR, ICAO IR or IMC/IR(R).

The flying training must include at least 10 hours of instrument flight time under instruction in an aeroplane at an approved training provider for the CBIR.

The total amount of dual instrument instruction must be at least of 25 hours, of which at least 15 hours shall be completed in a multi-engine aeroplane.
